The Days that Feel Really Hard
Not every day is a “progress” day. Some days feel like everything is a struggle, every request turns into a battle and you’re running on very little patience… and probably not enough coffee. And those are the days people don’t usually talk about, but they’re real. If you’ve had one of those days recently or you’re in the middle of one right now just know you’re not alone.
It’s easy to start questioning everything on days like that. You might wonder if you’re doing something wrong, if your child is really making progress or if anything you’re doing is actually working. But hard days don’t mean any of those things. Sometimes, it’s just a hard day. Progress isn’t a straight “picture perfect” line; it’s messy, unpredictable, and full of ups and downs that don’t always make sense in the moment.
You can love your child more than anything and still feel overwhelmed. You can be patient most of the time and still hit a moment where you need a break. You can be doing everything “right” and still think, “this is really hard”. All of that is normal, even if it doesn’t always feel like it.
The thing about progress is that it doesn’t disappear just because one day feels heavy. One tough day doesn’t undo all the effort, all the learning or all the small wins that have already happened. Even on the hardest days, there are still moments where there was maybe a slightly easier transition, a quicker recovery, or even just one small moment of connection. They’re easy to miss when the day feels overwhelming, but they still count.
Sometimes the best thing you can do is reset. Take a breath, give yourself a little grace and try again tomorrow. That’s not giving up; that’s parenting.
If today felt heavy, that makes sense. If you’re tired, that makes sense too. And if all you did today was get through it, that counts more than you think. You’re still showing up, and that matters more than anything.
